Before The Mission Calendar officially started operations a group of young missionaries had an opportunity to distribute calendars as a fundraiser for their mission trip to Honduras. Most trip costs average $1,200.00 and that number threatens to go up with rising gas prices and it’s effect on airlines.
These trip prices however are great values and not only include Flight but also meals, room and board, and any additional activities they may participate in during the trip. More importantly a larger part of the price covers construction materials, medical supplies and other items necessary for the mission.
In addition to distributing calendars to raise money for their trips one dedicated participant would have a chance to have their entire remaining trip balance paid by becoming the top donation collector. This year’s top collector was Jonathan Gonzalez. We caught up with him to see how this process worked out for him.
Q: The summer before the release of The Mission Calendar young missionaries had an opportunity to offer out mission calendars to raise money for their trip to Honduras. How did this work out for you?
A: It was great. To tell you the truth, it was absolutely perfect. I had no trouble presenting them. In fact, they pretty much sold them selves.
Q: in addition to receiving 25% per calendar donation toward their trip each participant had a chance to get their remaining trip balance paid for in full by becoming the top donation collector, you where able to pull this off in 2008. How did you do it?
A: I really couldn't do it without the support of my family. In the beginning, I was a little shy about talking to people about the calendars. I just didn't know how people would react to it. My mom kept pushing me to go out and tell people about them, and not care what people thought. I accredit my mom for all my success.
Q: Do you have any advise for future missionaries who may use this fund raising tool to go on mission trips?
A: Exhaust all of your resources. Start first with close relatives, neighbors and friends. No matter what, there is always someone you know who would enjoy helping you out and getting a calendar. You just have to look hard enough.
